This morning I complained on my Twitter account about a certain Persian CBC radio personality. No less than 10 minutes later I received a direct message from the man himself, asking why I disliked him so. Do I respond? or do I ignore it? I used his full name, so I at least subconsciously wanted him to see it, but I never expected him to reach out (I assumed he gets too much hate mail to respond to).
My reasons for disliking the guy are pretty personal. I find him pompous and arrogant and smug and narcissistic (these are all the same thing, right?). He somehow manages to make all of his interviews about him, frequently interjecting and interrupting his guests - rarely do they finish speaking a sentence before you hear his voice chiming in again. His monologues are both condescending and corny. He has less tact than even Steve Armitage - I once heard him ask Phil Collins, essentially, how he felt about being uncool and irrelevant. Related: I can often hear the frustration and contempt in the voices of his guests. Plus, I find it awfully hard to take music and art criticism from a guy who was essentially the bongo player in a barbershop quartet/novelty band (yeah I know barbershop is a-capella).
Specifically, today he Twittered: "Haiti: 'Why did it take shift of tectonic plates for us to start caring? Merely replacing indifference w/ guilt is not a solution.' (Picard)". This bothered me for reasons I am not eloquent enough to state. I gave. I felt ~better about myself. But apparently I should have been giving all along. Aargh. Whatever.
So, as you can see, my response does not fit neatly into a 140 character-space. Plus, I feel much more comfortable complaining out loud to no one in particular than attacking some dude to his face. Yay internet! Consider your response ignored, sir... unless you read this... in which case... um, this is why I un-followed you. Sorry so harsh.
But this is just my opinion. Clearly he is liked by many and is pretty successful at what he does. I'm sure the reasons I don't like him are the very reasons others love him...
Again... whatever.
