Film: Struggling With The Sun

I just had an entire roll of film developed and ... sigh. 90% of the photos were taken in bright daylight conditions, and 90% of those included either (i) subjects completely obscured by shadows, or (ii) silhouettes of trees taken into the direction of the sun. The latter is my default mode for daylight photography - I have more pictures of big black tree trunks against a washed out background than almost anything else (save for Lydia and cats). It is either my clutch or my trademark. Let's say crutch. I need to learn the art of the fill flash.
