You and I have had many good times - mostly after school, while you were in syndication, or in the evenings pre-Empty Nest. You, with your white seniors afro and matching wine. Me - with ridiculous racing stripes shaved into the side of my head, slugging back a huge bowl of cereal. I was too young to know anything but your Dorothy character, but her flower-printed dresses and pastel Miami bungalow were comforting to me in a late 1980s, upper-middle class, plastic, American kind of way - I know that doesn't make any sense, but such was our relationship.
Turns out you may have been cooler than your late career output would have suggested, and it is indeed unfortunate that our relationship became a running gag among my geriatriphile friends. I imagine these jokes will continue, only now - since your passing - with an added degree of poor taste.
My regards Maude and Dorothy - dusty rose colored walls and carpeting will hitherto be the decor of melancholy and loss.
