So I know a guy (from Montreal) who knows a guy (and so on) who was tight with the Arcade Fire back in the day, and this afternoon I was presented with an early demo dating back to winter 2000. True story, give or take a few degrees of separation.
The songs - titled Cars & Telephones, Sonata, Gasoline, Tremallo, The Flood, Accidents, Nebraska, and A Kid Burns Down My Home (which may have later become the unreleased track Goodnight Boy) - sound like they're performed by a completely different band, with different voices and different instrumentation. Regine is nowhere to be... heard. Fewer strings and more acoustic guitar. That said, and this might be because I'm a fan and appreciate what they've grown to become, the songs are completely captivating. Moody. Creeping. Creepy. And, I daresay, in my worst and most pretentious music writer voice - raw.
Love it.
If you'd like to hear, drop me a line and I'll, y'know, see what I can do.
