King Leary

Hockey plus funny = say hello to mah new favourite book. I read this guy in one sitting and laughed out loud probably once per page. Highly, highly recommended...

Written by the same author as Whale Music (another favourite of mine, also recommended), King Leary deals with many of the same situations and themes as that book - namely, an aging superstar (in this case an athlete, whereas in Whale Music it was a semi-sane Brian Wilson-esque musician) is forced to revisit the regrets and questionable decisions of his past. In both books, the negative aspects of celebrity culture, fame, money, infidelity, drugs and alcohol all play very prominent roles. Both books are told from the perspective of a semi-lucid protagonist. Both books address the stark and serious subject matter with humour. Both books... are good.

Upon re-read, that post seemed a little too college newspaper-y. Oh well. Read book. Book good. Book win CBC's Canada Reads competition. Yay!

This is our Book Club book for this month. Sam picked it. I have barely started it but I wasn't that jazzed about it until I read your entry. I will approach it this evening with a tad more enthusiasm and an open mind.
