Admission

Remember when Sarah McLachlan was good? Maybe you never thought she was good in the first place, but long ago in the early/mid nineties she was something of a (possibly unhealthy) obsession of mine, and it is my understanding that this was perfectly acceptable for the time. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy was near-perfect (save for "Ice Cream"), even though Spin gave it a rating of red (?) and called it "second-rate Kate Bush" or something to that effect. Solace was aces too, and spawned "Path of Thorns" - whose video was the likely starting point for my teenage obsession.

Now I'm not saying I would chuck it on the stereo for those long drives into the city with the guys, or on my way to the game, or with anyone outside of my girlfriend (now wife) around. Her music had its place, and I dare say it was not in public. That said, about six of us couples saw her at The Cohn on her "Ecstasy" tour, and it was... really good. Even the pierced dude came along, albeit possibly for his own ulterior motives.

Then she married her dorky drummer. Then she cut her hair. Then came Lilith Fair. And the City Of Angels soundtrack. And Surfacing, and "Angel" - in fact, "Angel" it where is all ends for me. With this overwrought piece of super syrupy cheesy... cheese she went from being the kind-of-cool Canadian songstress with neat production and sexy, breathy vocals to a warbling corporate caricature on par with Mariah Carey or a lesser Celine Dion. Boo!

Why this all now? She came on my iPod is all. Fortunately I can still enjoy those early albums.

Yup.

End fanboy rant.
