As much as I hate the Toronto Maple Leafs, I do feel for their soon-to-be-sacked GM, who is holding down his current position as the head of a losing sports franchise while the ravenous Canadian sports media reports his pending demise, potential replacements, tabled offers, interviews, etc. And while I don't deny he has done a pitiful job in assembling a competitive team and likely deserves to be fired (although owner interference is suspect in every move the team makes), I do sympathize with his situation. Heck, I only wanted the team to lose, not have their management lynched before the entire country.
The funny thing is, the media is criticizing the Leaf owners for how they've handled the situation - tabling offers behind Ferguson's back, not letting him know he may be replaced, etc. - while at the same time, deriding them from not having a plan or a path forward. Well, in fairness, it seems to me that they are trying to secure a path forward so that they're not left without a GM once they've fired Ferguson. I would think that this is how things are done. And do they really have a responsibility to tell Ferguson that they're actively seeking his replacement? If it wasn't for the Toronto sports media and the TSN insiders reporting every single phone call the owners have made in the past few weeks, I'm sure this whole situation would be playing out in a much more professional manner. So I have to chuckle when TSN talking heads express sympathy for Ferguson because as far as I can tell, they're the ones broadcasting his execution.
Anyways, go Habs.
