Songs From The Big Chair

What timing. Two days ago I start up this here blog out of nostalgia for those good old days, before - you know - microwaves and internet and DVDs and the 90s' fashionable self-hatred and such. Then today on CBC Maritime Noon - an hour-long discussion on 80s music. Is it something in the water? Is it because all the kiddies are going back to school? Is it the recent rash of news pieces on youth violence and swarmings and teenage girls attacking senior citizens with metal table legs? Is all of HRM feeling lost and nostalgic too? WTF?

Anyway, back to Maritime Noon. Folks were being prompted to call in with their 80s music memories. There were the usual Madonna, MJ and Duran Duran supporters. REM. Tom Cochrane. Bruce Springsteen. Even Billy Idol. But no one even bothered to mention my favourite 80s band (at the time anyway)...

That's right, I said it. Tears For Fears. I loved it all, and before Donnie Darko almost made it cool. The questionable name, the shouting, the silly rat-tail haircuts, the earrings, the video with the monkey in it. All. But then they recruited some soul-singer lady and released Seeds of Love. And Roland accused Curt of being lazy and not writing any of the songs (he played the bass fergodsakes). And then they broke up, but by that time my 13 year-old self had discovered musical bliss in shitty canned beats and generic PG raps about house parties. But I'll always have Shout, I'll always have Songs From The Big Chair. Funny how tiiiiime fliiiies...

Come to think of it, no one mentioned Mr. Mister either....
